Abstract:

Changes in household composition and structure have an impact on the distribution of goods and services, the planning of community institutions, and requirements for schools, housing, and the health infrastructure. This comparative report looks at 25 national surveys conducted under the first phase of the Demographic and Health Surveys program (DHS I) and addresses definitions of the household and issues related to the data comparability; quality of age data; and household demographic characteristics such as age and sex structure, size of households and headship of households.
